California, Safari West and the Redwoods

California-Day 3-Safari West and off to the Redwoods.

After breakfast at Safari West, included in your fee, Lightning took out her travel journal and drew a wonderful picture of our view from our cabin.  We started a travel journal so she could memorialize her travels and write almost nightly in her journal.

On the road again to the Benbow Inn in Garberville, CA, http://www.benbowinn.com.  A quaint hotel situated about an hour from Eureka, about 15 minutes from Richardson Grove State Park, 20 minutes from the Avenue of the Giants among other local sites.   The hotel states you have access to a pool, but the pool is actually about a 5 minute walk to the KOA campgrounds and the use of their pool.  The campground was pretty crowded as was the pool.  We opted not to use the pool, but it seemed OK.

After check in our first stop was to Richardson Grove State Park. When you first arrive at the park and pay your entry fee (I think it was $8.00 for the car) ask for the Junior Ranger Guide.  Lighting completed her guide and upon leaving the park she received a patch, sticker and a pencil from the park ranger’s office.  This park is more of a campground park, but it was a nice detour and Lighting was able to complete her guide easily in the park. http://kids.parks.ca.gov/pages/22783/files/JrRanger_AdventureGuide_English.pdf

We visited the Grandfather tree, toured some gift shops and decided to head back to the hotel and just rest.  We were starving and had not eaten yet.  Fortunately when we returned to the room a cheese platter was in our room with bread and fruit, 2 boxes of chocolates and a bottle of wine, courtesy of my sister for my birthday.  It hit the spot and then we took a tour around the hotel property and went to bed early anticipating a long day.
